Blade Runner (1982)

Blade Runner Wikipedia

Blade Runner IMDb (8,3 out of 10)

Blade Runner is a 1982 science fiction neo-noir American film directed by Ridley Scott from a screenplay written by Hampton Fancher and David Peoples, based on the novel Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick. The film features Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer, Sean Young, Edward James Olmos, Daryl Hannah and Joanna Cassidy.

The film depicts a dystopian Los Angeles in November 2019 in which genetically manufactured beings called replicants—visually indistinguishable from adult humans—are used for dangerous and degrading work in Earth's "off-world colonies". Following a small replicant uprising, replicants become illegal on Earth; and specialist police units called "blade runners" are trained to hunt down and "retire" (kill) escaped replicants on Earth. The plot focuses on a brutal and cunning group of replicants hiding in Los Angeles and a semi-retired blade runner, Rick Deckard (Ford), who reluctantly agrees to take on one more assignment.

The film is credited with prefiguring important concerns of the 21st century, such as globalization and genetic engineering. It remains a leading example of the neo-noir genre. Blade Runner brought author Philip K. Dick to the attention of Hollywood and several more films have since been based on his work. Ridley Scott regards Blade Runner as his "most complete and personal film." In 2007, the American Film Institute listed it as the 97th greatest film of all time and the Internet Movie Database ranks the film as number 103 in the top 250 films.

SGI Crimson Futuretech

The IRIS Crimson is an older Silicon Graphics (SGI) system released in the early 1990s. It was the world's first 64-bit workstation.

Crimson was a member of Silicon Graphics's IRIS 4D series of deskside systems; it was also known as the 4D/510 workstation. It was similar to other SGI IRIS 4D deskside workstations, and could utilise a wide range of graphics options (up to RealityEngine). It was also available as a file server with no graphics. This machine was made famous with its brief cameo in the movie Jurassic Park where the granddaughter of Hammond, Lex, was using the machine to navigate the filesystem in 3D on IRIX 4.0 using the IRIX application FSN in order to restore power to the compound. The year following the film's release, Silicon Graphics released a rebadged, limited edition Crimson R4400/VGXT called the "Jurassic Classic", which included a special logo and featured SGI co-founder Jim Clark's signature on the drive door.

Features:

# Superpipelined MIPS 100MHz R4000 or 150MHz R4400 processor.

# Choice of seven high performance 3D graphics subsystems deliver performance and features to match any application.

# Up to 256MB memory and internal disk capacity up to 7.2GB, expandable to greater than 72GB using additional enclosures.

# High performance I/O subsystem includes four VME expansion slots, Ethernet and two SCSI channels with disk striping support.

Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675)

essentialvermeer

Johannes Vermeer or Jan Vermeer (October 31, 1632, died December 15, 1675) was a Dutch painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of ordinary bourgeois life. His entire life was spent in the town of Delft. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial painter in his lifetime. He seems to have never been particularly wealthy, perhaps due to the fact that he produced relatively few paintings, leaving his wife and eleven children in debt at his death.

Virtually forgotten for nearly two hundred years, in 1866 the art critic Thoré Bürger published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him (only 35 paintings are firmly attributed to him today). Since that time Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, and is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work.

THX 1138 IMDb (6,7 out of 10)

THX 1138 is a 1971 science fiction film written and directed by George Lucas, with Walter Murch collaborating on the screenplay. It depicts an Orwellian future, featuring three residents of a dystopia in which a high level of control is exerted upon the populace through ever-present faceless, android police officers and mandatory, regulated use of special drugs to suppress emotion, including sexual desire.

It was the first feature-length film directed by Lucas, and a more developed, feature-length version of his student film Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB, which he made in 1967, based on a one and a quarter page treatment of an idea by Matthew Robbins, while attending the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. It shares themes with The Machine Stops, Anthem, Brave New World, Nineteen Eighty-Four, and Ira Levin's This Perfect Day; bears a very strong resemblance to Yevgeny Zamyatin's We; and was inspired in part by the short film 21-87. The film was produced in a joint-venture between Warner Brothers and Francis Ford Coppola's then-new production company, American Zoetrope.

2046 is a Hong Kong movie (filmed in Shanghai) written and directed by Wong Kar-wai and released in 2004. It is a loose sequel to Days of Being Wild (released in 1991) and In the Mood for Love (released in 2000). It follows the aftermath of Chow Mo-wan's unconsummated affair with Su Li-Zhen in 1960s Hong Kong but also includes some science fiction elements.

An atmospheric romance about dark-edged romance--sometimes skin deep; sometimes throbbing with physical and visual sensation.

The camera achieves striking beauty... Each smile, each tear, each lit cigarette achieves a sort of luminescent stature unmatched by even Wong’s previous films.

Another achingly evocative and melancholy near-masterpiece from Wong Kar-Wai...blessed with vivid, visceral performances that burst at the seams with reserved passion.

Ununoctium

Ununoctium is the temporary IUPAC name for the superheavy element having atomic number of 118, currently the highest atomic number assigned to a reputedly discovered element. It has the temporary IUPAC element symbol Uuo. It can also be called eka-radon and only three atoms of this element have been detected. The name ununoctium is a systematic element name, used as a placeholder until the IUPAC decides on a name.

On October 16, 2006, researchers working at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia, announced in Physical Review C that they had indirectly detected a total of three nuclei of ununoctium-294 (one in 2002 and two more in 2005) produced via collisions of californium-249 atoms and calcium-48 ions.
